Abstract The author carries out an analysis of the British Government, which is divided into three parts. The first part examines the organisation and the main functions of the core executive in Britain, with regard to the structure of the Cabinet – composed of cabinet ministers and the Prime Minister – and the Government departments. He also analyses the mainly consultative and technical functions of the offices responsible for implementing government policy, namely the Cabinet Office and the Prime Minister’s Office. The second part focuses on structural and functional aspects of the Prime Minister’s support staff i.e. the Press Office, the Political Office, the Political Unit and the Special Advisers. Finally, in the last part of the article, the author underlines the main characteristics of the support staff, their role within the British administrative system and all related key issues. |
