Abstract Austrian savings banks were established during 19th century. Recently the Austrian State reformed the savings banks system so as to separate them from charitable institutions. According to this new legal framework there are two types of savings banks. On one hand, there are private law savings banks foundations – with charitable tasks – that own the newly re-established savings banks stocks. On the other hand, there are savings banks re-incorporated as stock companies (AG). The latter actively participated in the process of privatization of the main banks controlled by the Austrian State. They are currently among the biggest Austrian banks in terms of assets and market shares. However, the possibility for foundations to act as shareholders and their interaction with local public authorities are still open issues. |
