Abstract The privatisation of the banking systems of Italy and other European countries is one of the most important developments in financial market assets of the last few years. Notwithstanding the fact that these reforms are common to many Member States of the EU a comparison between the Italian banking system – after the introduction of banking foundations – and the British one, is not easy. In fact, the UK has never had institutions that control banking equity capital with compulsory public benefit destination of shareholder assets. The Author first describes the main phases of the English banking system liberalisation process, from the statute laws approved in the 1980s to the recent financial market regulations and reforms. He then focuses on the British voluntary sector with particular reference to charitable organizations that the Italian legislator took as a model to reform banking foundations in Italy. |
