Abstract The Dutch higher education system combines tradition and innovation. Tradition is represented by the rather corporative university governance, particularly in terms of constant dialogue and involvement of the academic component in decision-making regarding the education policy. Innovation has to do with the strong market-oriented approach particularly with regard to recruitment and organization of academic life. The combination of these two – for some extent opposite – aspects proves all in all quite successful due to the generous State financial support to higher education and research and to the cooperative culture in Dutch society. |
