The German Federal Bank has always been highly respected for its control of inflation. German savings banks were long considered an oasis of stability, but the German system of State guarantees for public law credit institutions wasn’t compatible with the State aid rules of the EC Treaty. In line with Community State aid procedures, the abolition of state guarantees is beginning to change the landscape of Germany’s public-sector banks. The German Government is taking all the necessary action to guarantee the financial system’s stability and is trying to find a way to save the country’s ailing banking sector. In October 2008 the government announced that it would guarantee all private savings accounts in Germany, and Parliament passed the German Financial Market Stabilization Act. In March 2009 Parliament passed the Supplementary Financial Market Stabilization Act. |
