Abstract

The article deals with the issue of the protection of minorities in the Slovak Republic, a legal system that recognizes the national principle – instead the civic one – in the constitutional preamble. The focus is on the national-building approach found in the preamble of the Slovak Constitution, concerning the relations between majority and minorities. In order to understand these relations, we direct our attention to the constitutional provisions and their normative implementation as well. The findings reveal that the Slovak legal system in coherent with the standard sets by European Union over minority protection. Nonetheless, the recognition of group rights in the Slovak Republic still results relatively low with respect to the claims put forward by the largest minority, the hungarian one.
