Abstract The essay describes the main parameters on the basis of which territorial change at a statelevel occurs in Canada and in the United States. These changes are analyzed under the dou-ble perspective of internal reconfiguration and external fragmentation. The essay therefore firstfocuses on Canadian federated Territories, on Commonwealths in the U.S. and also on landrights of autochthonous people. Second, it addresses the issue of secession of federated enti-ties, with special reference to the case of Quebec and its potential impact on the Canadianfederation. This last case is highly relevant and this justifies the greater attention, also in termsof number of pages, that the essay pays to territorial changes at a state level in Canada ratherthan in the U.S. |
