Abstract The essay focuses on territorial changes in the Russian Federation as a mean to “reduce” sub-national entities that are part of the Federation. First, it briefly describes the experience under the Soviet Union and then moves on to the analyses of the concept of “component” of the Russian Federation as it developed starting from the dissolution of the Soviet Union. As a conclusion the essay offers a comprehensive overview of all territorial changes that could po- tentially happen in the Federation (accession of new members and creation of new subjects inside the Federation) |
