Abstract Two basic laws containing many of the important elements of a classic Bill of Rights were passed in Israel in 1992. This article briefly traces the history of the protection of human rights before and after this date. In particular, it analyzes the jurisprudential outset of the new legislation, whose constitutional status is still controversial, and describes the role of the Supreme Court and its power of judicial review. |
