Abstract

The office of President of the Conseil constitutionnel is one of the most important in the French constitutional system. Even though there are considerable formal powers, the importance of the office is connected to its actual practice. In fact, the President has always been the uncontested leader of the institution, which has often been characterized by his policy. Thus, the evolution of the Conseil constitutionnel – a key part of the French system – is also the result of the evolution of its President and of his increasing autonomy from the Chief of State, by whom the President of the Conseil is appointed.
