Abstract The article describes the evolution of the European legislative framework on agricultural biotechnology and GMOs. It starts from the analysis of the first directives described as a kind of passive reaction to the biotechnology revolution. It then takes into account the definition of a set of juridical categories and it ends with a detailed analysis of the two proposals concerning GMOs authorisation, labelling and traceability that have almost been approved. The study arrives to the conclusion that the continuous changes in Community legislation are the consequence of the attempt to define a genuine European approach to GMOs, an approach able to promote scientific evolution and defend consumers'interests. The new proposals, and especially the so-called Food and Feed regulation, represent an important step towards this goal. The next one will be the solution of the various juridical problems arising from the co-existence between traditional, organic and genetically modified crops. The last part of the research is dedicated to this issue. |
