Abstract

The article deals with the judicial status of a number of small indigenous populations that have settled in the northern most zone of Russia, namely the Inuits and the Lapps. Throughout history, they have had to abide by highly restrictive norms although at times these have been mitigated by the considerable distance between the territories in question and the political and decisionmaking centre of Russia. However, alongside certain protective aspects dating back to the Russian Imperial Law, a diachronic assessment highlights a progressive development of a comprehensive judicial framework which shows more attention to the need to protect the native Nordic micropopulations within the renewed post-Soviet legal institutions.
