Abstract European legislation on euthanasia is extremely fragmented, only Dutch and Belgian law disciplines the subject. First, this work tries to outline the situation with an introduction describing the general issues about euthanasia in several European States (Denmark, Great Britain, Germany, Switzerland, Italy) and the solutions adopted there, with particular regard to Italian law and the different problems involved. Second, the essay analyses both the Dutch and Belgian laws, focusing on the fundamental principles enshrined in the two Acts, and on the historical reasons that prompted their promulgation. Finally, this short overview illustrates the possible solutions, and the difficulty in obtaining a uniform solution which is the aim shared by all: law-makers, the Church and public opinion. |
