Abstract This article comments on a recent European Parliament resolution on immigration, integration and employment, which focuses on three main themes: the consideration of immigrants as a valuable resource for European economic growth, the need for their integration in the host countries as a key factor of social cohesion, and the necessity of a comprehensive and organized approach to migratory flows. The article also surveys the degree of implementation of the above principles in the field of EC migration law. It ends in assessing that the adopted or proposed legislative measures are in principle consistent with the guidelines emerging from the EP resolution. However, they show some restrictive clauses that, although grounded on a justifiable concern in realizing a sustainable opening to migratory flows, may result in a paradoxical increase of illegal immigration, by reducing the opportunities of legal entry into the European area. |
