Abstract Over time the issue under scrutiny has been addressed and resolved in Switzerland in a coherent manner. Switzerland is a State bound to the principles of neutrality with respect to religion and secularism in the light of a history marked by religious conflict. A leading case of the Federal Court in 1990 underlined the fact that the exhibition of the crucifix in elementary schools violates these principles. Another decision in 1997 established that it is unacceptable for a teacher, a representative of the state school, to wear a Muslim headscarf. |
