Abstract The aim of this essay is to analyse the ambivalent nature of the Irish Constitution in the religious field. On one hand it recognizes the free practice of religion and forbids any discrimination on the grounds of religion, on the other hand it contains numerous references to God and Catholic doctrine. These references have been used as constitutional parameters of interpretation by judges and has fostered the establishment of a Catholic influence upon politics, especially in the fields of education, family and health, facilitated by the traditional homogeneity of Irish society. Now that Ireland is experiencing both economic and cultural changes it needs to rethink its politics in order to safeguard pluralism in all areas. |
