Abstract Switzerland is the country of referendums. This article describes the variety of referendums that can take place in what is considered the only semi-direct democracy in the modern world pointing out their peculiar features. Specifically the article underlines their frequency and the fact that they can be requested directly by the people thus proving to be a true manifestation of popular sovereignty. The article also highlights the difficulties referendums have caused to the political system. |
